Just like "en duo" and "la boum", "les filles" is a special edition of our compilation series and is dedicated exclusively to female chanson. For the accompanying tour version, Françoiz Breut and Marianne Dissard were the live acts. As different as the voices such as Breut, Dissard, Fredda, Coralie Clément or Barbara Carlotti are, the exclusively feminine vocals make this compilation especially harmonious. We chose them because we wanted to pay special tribute to the role of women in this genre, because they are the ones who have opened doors for the new chanson all over the world.

Barbara Carlotti

Barbara Carlotti's wonderful, slightly melancholic chansons appealed to us right away. The noble timbre of the Corsican singer's voice perfectly matched the unobtrusive arrangements of her debut CD «Les Lys Brises», making «Cannes» a natural choice for Le Pop 4. Carlotti's sophomore album «L'Idéal», from which we took «Mademoiselle Opossum», is even better: the songs are more diverse, the whole album is pop at its best. Like «Les Lys Brises» «L'Idéal» is released by the English label 4AD. Which goes to show: there's no language barrier in pop, at least not for a singer as stunning as Barbara Carlotti.

Fredda

One of many people's favourites on Le Pop 3 was Fredda's «Les copines d'abord». Fredda went by the name of Frédérique Dastrevigne back then. «Barry White» is her homage to long gone teenage days, when Fredda and her friends used to dance to Barry White tunes under glitzy disco lights in Marseille. Last year saw the release of Fredda's debut on Le Pop Musik. Since then it has also been released in the US. «Toutes Mes Aventures» is a charming collection of almost timeless pop tunes, recorded in collaboration with Fredda's partner Pascal Parisot. Our version of «Barry White» is a new remix originally produced for French Radio.

Coralie Clément

After a sojourn in the world of indie rock, Coralie Clément has teamed up again with her brother Benjamin Biolay for her third album. «Toystore» is an appropriate title: The album is very playful, was recorded using tons of toy instruments and prominently features an instrument currently extremely popular in France: the ukulele. «So long Babylone» mixes reggae influences, Parisian Flair and a killer hook line in a way only Biolay could dream up! It would appear that working with his sister brings out the very best in him!

Constance Amiot

Constance Amiot has been around the block a few times and has now found a new home at the well known Parisian label tôt Ou tard. Born in Abidjan, the former capital of the Ivory Coast, Amiot grew up in Cameroon before moving to the US. «Clash dans le tempo» is a laid back melange of folk music and groove, released both in English and in French. Amiot sings as well as she raps. The song references an early hit of celebrated French HipHop star MC Solaar («Qui sème le vent récolte le tempo»). Recently the two artists were seen performing together on French TV. Amiot's debut album is called «Fairytale».

Julie B. Bonnie

On Le Pop en duo she sang together with Pierre Bondu, experts know her as the former singer of the band Cornu. Now Julie B. Bonnie has found a collaborator in trip hop genius Kid Loco. Together the two of them recorded an entire album, which is as yet unreleased. This makes us all the more grateful that Julie B. Bonnie has allowed us to release «Bonjour Monsieur» on LePop Les Filles. French chanson has never been more funky then this. This one is for the dancefloor! Kid Loco's influence is all over the track, making this the new dream team of French Pop.

Here's another way of making your way on to a Le Pop compilation. Send us a mail! And attach a song as charming as «La Parapluie» – if you can! With its gentle melody and artful arrangement this might well be the best French rain song since Brigitte Fontaine gave us «Il pleut». «La Parapluie» is as unreleased as «Bonjour Monsieur» – which goes to show that French record labels are about to miss the current wave of new female talent!

Poney Express

Le Pop-Party, indie dance floor, radio air play, compilations: «Paris de loin» is a song for many occasions, a classic up tempo tune that reminds us more than just a bit of the early Belle and Sebastian. Which – it turns out – is no coincidence: Parisian duo Poney Express recorded their album in Britain. If Poney Express nevertheless retain a distinctly French sound then this is chiefly thanks to singer Ana Berthe's performance. Robin Feix, man on the bass, responsible for the relentless drive of the song that makes you wanna dance, learnt his skills as a founding member of the band Louise Attaque.

Marianne Dissard

Marianne Dissard is one of the most exciting discoveries of recent years. If she hasn't been at the centre of French pop so far, it's because of where she lives: As a teenager Dissard moved to Arizona with her parents. Marianne has had a long career in and around the music industry, but has only recently started to write her own songs. If you like Calexico, you know her as a duet partner for Joey Burns («The Ballad of Cable Hogue»). It was Burns too, who produced her excellent debut «L'entredeux» at Wavelab studio in Tucson, Arizona. The result is a surprising melange of Americana and Chanson, presented by a singer with a great sense of humour. «Les draps sourds» is a wild tale about a sexual encounter with plenty of uninvited guests. The video is adult only!

Marianne Feder

Just like Julie B. Bonnie, Marianne Feder was featured on Le Pop en duo. Her then partner: Alexis HK. Feder's second album «Toi mon indien» was released recently. The connection with traditional chanson has been replaced by a stronger jazz influence. Case in point: the title track, with its opulent horn arrangements. «Caravan» comes to mind! But in the end it’s neither the jazz nor the horn arrangements that steal the show, as «Toi mon indien» is so obviously dominated by Marianne's beautiful and expressive voice!

Doris Park

A French chanson from Sweden? Is that even allowed? Well, yes. Of course! French is a foreign language for Maria Törnqvist and Saemundur Karlsson aka Doris Park. But you wouldn't know it, listening to «Je ne te quitterais jamais». Doris Park switches effortlessly between English and French. And in the end, we were convinced: The two languages, the extravagant melodic lines, the gentle offbeat, the booming bass, and of course the crystal clear voice of Maria Törnqvists: This is French Pop at its best. Perhaps more foreigners should be joining the game? We are all for it!

Mélanie Pain

The bad news is: We are still waiting for Mélanie Pain's first solo album. The good news is: For the 2nd time (after Le Pop 4) we are able to present an exclusive song of the Nouvelle Vague singer. «Celle de mes 20 ans» proves yet again, that Mélanie Pain is much more than a good voice for coffee house versions of famous songs. The time has come for Melanie to kick off her solo career. Her collaborators on this one are songwriter Benoït de Villeneuve and producer Marc Collin, who is also the mastermind behind Nouvelle Vague.

Françoiz Breut

At some point not so long ago Françoiz Breut decided that she had spent long enough singing other people’s songs. The list is long: Jérôme Minière, Dominique A, Joey Burns, Katerine and many others wrote for Françoiz. For her brand new album «À l'aveuglette» (released by TRec and Le Pop Musik) Breut wrote all the lyrics herself. The songs were written in collaboration with long time band members Boris Gronemberger and Luc Rambo in a small house in northern France. The result is an atmospheric and deep album, from which we picked «2013». The album is much more homogenous then previous ones, the spell Françoiz Breut casts with her voice is as intense as ever. Does it get more beautiful than this? Hardly.

Austine

Musicians from Northern France appear to be strongly influenced by nearby Britain. This is certainly true for Austine, a native of Lille, who lives in Rennes these days. The sound of her highly recommended album «Ouh La La La» makes you think off The Sundays, Belle and Sebastian, or – even farther north – The Cardigans. Her singing on the other hand perfectly emulates the cliché of the fragile French femme, who mistakes breathing for singing! This by the way makes her a bit of an exception on Le Pop Les Filles! But anyway: Austine's mix of chanson and Brit pop is charming and classy. We'll have to ask her though, whether «Cupide et stupide» (greedy and dumb) is a comment on the current financial meltdown!

C plus plus

C++ is a pretty strange name for a band – it originally being the name of a computer programming language. But never mind! Their album «Orienté Objet» is full of hits such as the wonderful duel between a mellotron and a guitar that is at the heart of «Les Hasards». Singer Charlotte and multi-instrumentalist David are deeply in love with their sixties beats, 70s avant-garde sounds of the Kraftwerk variety, and 80s new wave influences. If this sounds un-French to you – think again! The influence of Serge Gainsbourg and Françoise Hardy is all over C++. But does it work? You bet it does! Charlotte and David are great songwriters and they've got what it takes: humour.

Loane

Loane's «Le petit bonheur» is a wonderful waltz which slowly grows into a song of the strangest beauty. Loane is a professionally trained pianist and singer, her debut «Jamais Seule» was released by Virgin France in 2008. While always performing solo on stage, Loane had some help recording «Jamais Seule»: Fabrice Dumont and Frédéric Fortuny used to work for Autour de Lucie (Le Pop 1) back in the early 2000s, now the congenial duo has produced a remarkably timeless sound for Loane.

Jeanne Cherhal

For the finishing track we picked a special treat for everybody: Annoyed by the soap-opera-wedding of Nicholas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni in the spring of 2008, Jeanne Cherhal picked a fight with the Elysée by recording a song based on a rumour. According to the rumour Sarkozy send his ex-wife an SMS offering to call off the wedding with Bruni, if she would return to him: «Si tu reviens j’annule tout.» Cherhal turned the phrase into a jewel of a song, sending her own ex-boyfriend a message along the way! The scandalous song has never been released before, making it the perfect final chord for Le Pop Les Filles!
